The Seven Most Traded Currencies in FOREX.

Currencies are traded in dollar amounts called lots. One lot is equal to $1,000, which controls $100,000 in currency. This is what is known as the “margin”. You can control $100,000 worth of currency for only 1,000 dollars. This is what is called High Leverage.

Currencies are always traded in pairs in the FOREX. The pairs have a unique notation that expresses what currencies are being traded. The symbol for a currency pair will always be in the form ABC/DEF. ABC/DEF is not a real currency pair, it is an example of a symbol for a currency pair. In this example ABC is the symbol for one countries currency and DEF is the symbol for another countries currency.

Here are some of the common symbols used in the Forex:

The euro at all time high

Lately we’ve seen the euro getting stronger against the dollar for each and every day and today we’re once again at an all time high level of 1.378200 dollars for each euro:

USD-EUR at 2007-07-16

Will be continue to see this development? Most likely since the European central bank will keep the interest rate at a high level and also maybe increasing it some more while the US central bank will most likely stay at the same level or maybe even decrease the interest rate. This development will of course make it harder for European companies trading mainly in USD since they will have a harder time to compete with US companies. The good part is that US companies will export even more then before which leads to more money flowing in to the US (higher demand for a specific currency = higher exchange rate).

Some exchange rates against the dollar (today 2007/07/16).

1 EUR in other currencies 2007/07/16:
US Dollar 1.378200 USD
British Pound 0.677950 GBP
Japanese Yen 168.679993 JPY
Swiss Franc 1.657900 CHF
Swedish Krona 9.156000 SEK
Canadian Dollar 1.441400 CAD

A great thanks to Xavier Finance for the exchange rates and the graph :D

The USD is going down

This week the US dollar has been decreasing against many of the major currencies like Euro, Pund, Yen and Swedish Krona. Many experts belive this will continue for some time, so I guess you have to more your investments to other currencies like Euro.

In “Watch out for the dollar!” on the 23rd of June this year I posted some outlooks from a few Swedsih banks. According to the 6 month forecast it looks like Nordea, Föreningssparbanken and Handelsbanken are most correct. If they continue to be correct about the dollar we should see a dollar at the same level as today in about 12 months.

Oil price soon over 100 dollars?

Due to the conflict between Lebanon and Israel an oil price of over 100 dollars could be possible in th near future. Let’s just hope that there will be few hurricanes in the Mexican Gulf this hurricane season, otherwise the oil price will go up even more if the oil riggs in the Gulf can produce oil as they should.

Not only the oil is getting more and more expensive due to the conflict, but also gold and ethanol.

Oil price over 75 dollar

Yesterday when the trading at New York Mercantile Exchange, Nymex, closed the oile price had increased by 1,7 percent to $75,15! The reason for the price increase was the North Korean misile test :(

The dollar below 7 swedish crowns

According to Stefan Mellin at Danske Bank we should expect to see a dollar below seven swedish crowns before the end of 2006. This is fantastic news for americans looking for swedish investments, but it’s terrible for swedes with investments in US (like myself :( ). Let’s see if he’s correct or not.

The important thing here if the Fed will continue to increase the federal funds rate or not…..

Watch out for the dollar!

According to five scandinavian banks the dollar (USD) will get weaker against the swedish crown (SEK) in the next 12 months. In the end of December 2005 a dollar costs about 8 swedish crowns, but now you get a dollar for as low as 7,22 crowns!

Bank 3 months 6 months 12 months
Danske Bank 7,08 6,79 6,79
Föreningssparbanken 6,97 6,88 6,74
Handelsbanken 7,05 6,80 7,00
Nordea 7,11 7,08 7,00
SEB 7,50 7,50 6,80

A cheaper dollar will simply mean that scandinavians will see their US investments decrease in value :(

Dollar vs euro

According to Sandard & Poor we should expect a Euro to cost 1.45 US dollars at this time next year. A cheaper dollar will unfortunately mean lower profits for European export companies… :(
